The name Abdullah Muda or "Haji Lah" as he is known to Pulau Duyung folks, is synonymous with the shipbuilding industry in Terengganu.

Abdullah's fine and quality work has drawn international acclaim and the ships he made have sailed across the seas, from the idylic Pulau Duyong offshore until the freezing waters of Alaska.

"Shipbuilding has given me great gratification...especially when the quality is evaluated by foreigners who are impressed by the unique Malay skills and craftsmanship," the 69-year-old shipbuilder told Bernama at his house in Pulau Duyung recently.

To date, Abdullah has made more than 100 ships of various sizes and designs with the foreign orders coming from countries like United States, Canada, Australia, France and Singapore.

Apart from the conventional fishing boats and "perahu kolek", Abdullah who is assisted by 10 workers, also makes "Bedor" and "Pinis" yachts.

Haji Lah's efforts had brought him numerous accolades like the Terengganu Arts Personality Award (2002), Heritage Entrepreneur Award (2004), Heritage Entrepreneurs' Special President's Award (2004) and Terengganu Arts Award (2005).
